Augmented Reality – The Virtual World Around You
In 2009 augmented reality entered the mainstream field of view simultaneously for both entrepreneurs and mainstream corporate use. Large companies such as Lego, BMW, Adidas, and even the US Postal Service facilitated the propagation of the concept by rolling out promotional print content and interactive websites that pair video cameras with onscreen displays. Meanwhile, the profusion of smartphones, iPhones, and G1 phones has equipped millions of people to be able to view the “digital landscape” with similar displays while on the go. After years of wishful speculations, both mobile and desktop augmented reality has arrived.

On August 24 we are pleased to be hosting a presentation by Nokia, one of the pioneers in the augmented reality space. Kari Pulli, Research Fellow and Radek Grzeszczuk, Principal Scientist at Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, present an inside look at some of the augmented reality possibilities of the near and long term future. What’s worked? What hasn’t? How will augmented reality mix with social web and mobile? Wayfinding, environment modeling, and promotional tie-ins have all been part of the Nokia Research mix. Fortunately for us, many of their innovations and findings are published openly. Join us for this presentation and learn how virtual worlds are emerging, this time in fact, as the world around you.

Kari Pulli
Research Fellow Visual Computing and Ubiquitous Imaging team leader, Nokia Research Center

Kari’s academic and professional life has mostly dealt with computer graphics and computer vision. For his M.Sc. thesis Kari implemented a parallel graphics system on Transputers while visiting University of Paderborn, Germany in 1990-91. He worked as a researcher at University of Oulu, Finland on range vision in 1991-93. Kari’s PhD at University of Washington (1993-97) was a mixture of graphics and range vision (surface reconstruction and rendering with Tony DeRose and Linda Shapiro and many others), including simultaneous graphics internships at Microsoft, SGI, Alias|Wavefront. Kari worked as the technical head of the Digital Michelangelo project for Stanford in Palo Alto, Florence, Rome in 1998-99. Since joining Nokia 1999, Kari has been leading lots of graphics research there, and worked on graphics APIs such as OpenGL ES, M3G, and OpenVG for mobile devices. Kari has been Docent (adjunct professor) at University of Oulu since 2001, and taught
