Wanted to let you know about a unique conference on collaboration systems happening this Wednesday, March 3 at The Tech Museum in San Jose.

Organized by a batch of collaboration specialists calling themselves Program for the Future, and basing their ideals on Doug Engelbart’s vision of developing tool systems that can deal with the world’s complex and “wicked” and problems – this conference will be an experiential dive into the real-time use of multiple collaobration systems.

Finalists of the Program for the Future Challenge will be announced during the day – along with the announcement of one winner of the Engelbart Prize in the evening program (brief agenda)(full agenda).

Meshing virtual worlds, Google Wave, real time reporting from tables, video and more, this is one not to be missed. Less than 8 “real world” attendee spots remain open for the venue in San Jose, and if you can’t make it in person, register as a virtual participant. Join in with all the collaborative tools you can bring to this unique experiment.

Real and virtual registration at: http://colaboration2010.eventbrite.com

There will be multiple opportunities to link up with some of the most talented tool makers and users there, so here’s your invitation to get involved on all these levels.
See you there,
- Bob Ketner

“Entering the Digital Landscape 2010: Metaio Augmented Reality”

On February 22, 2010 the Virtual World SIG continues our exploration of the augmented reality space with a full evening of demos by the leader in the augmented reality category - metaio Inc. (http://www.metaio.com).

Metaio designs, develops and markets solutions that allow virtual 3D information to be superimposed seamlessly into the real environment in real-time. This is the company behind the most innovative and successful augmented reality (AR) integrations in marketing, point of purchase product information, and manufacturing. Their clients include Siemens, Audi, BMW, Mini, Bosch, GM, Daimler, Toyota, VW, Lego, Adidas, Earthmine, Popular Science, and has partnered with 6 or more research projects in the space.

Over the last 3 years augmented reality has severed its tether to the laptop and jumped onto mobile devices in a big way. In 2009 Metaio debuted the pioneering social augmented reality platform, Junaio (http://www.junaio.com) on the iPhone App Store. Their recently released Junaio API (http://www.junaio.com/index/cpapi) enables localized tours, scavenger hunts, user interaction with 3D objects, responsive localized points of interest (POI’s), non-player characters, historical education modules and of course, local business finders.

In this session Nora Guldemond will be demoing:
- Mobile augmented reality (junaio and markerless tracking)
- Social augmented reality (junaio on iPhone and soon, Android)
- Online (use-case and the Unifeye Viewer Xtra, plus mobile versions for iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile)
- Development environment (SDK for PC / Mobile / API for junaio)

If you’ve only read the headlines, you haven’t seen the abilities of augmented reality in their most practical applications (the “magic book” that opens to become a virtual world must be seen to be believed). Join us on February 22 to push the boundaries of what is and what will be possible, learn about what metaio describes as “the world’s first “AR city”, and find out what VentureBeat meant when they said, “Watch this space“.

“Engineers at United Space Alliance (USA) and Ford Motor Company are sharing their animation software experiences to create virtual reality simulations that benefit both astronauts and drivers.

Ford is applying virtual reality animation software that is used by movie animators and video game creators to improve real-life driving situations before the first prototype is even built. In an immersive Virtual Evaluation lab (iVE), Ford engineers create virtual vehicles complete with exterior views.

Engineers for United Space Alliance, the prime Space Shuttle contractor, are using the same technology at the Kennedy Space Center to help build future space vehicles safer and more efficiently. Current applications include using the technology to track and characterize launch debris during ascent. Past applications include developing processes to more efficiently remove and re-install the reinforced carbon-carbon panels on the Space Shuttle wing leading edges.

“In this virtual environment, we can evaluate early vehicle designs against a backdrop of virtual conditions and literally experience a vehicle from someone else’s vantage point before it is built, helping us to create a car, truck or crossover that provides the perfect environment for the driver and its occupants,” said Elizabeth Baron, Ford’s Virtual Reality and Advanced Visualization Technical Specialist.”
